Thanksgiving dinner - help

Tomorrow is Mothers Day and the family is having a full blown Thanksgiving dinner at the request of my sweet skinny mom.  Of all the things in the world.  Just days into this I have to face a brutal dinner.  Plus, if I even appear to be “dieting” to anyone in my family they get angry.   Got a health thing, can’t be fixed, and can kill your ass - almost got me last year, got over most of the damage, am running, and almost normal again.  Family and husband think I’m a moron for  running again.  So, I actually have to hide the desire to drop weight from them, which is why I come here .  Being “happy to be alive” is not all there is.  I am,  please don’t get me wrong.  Mom and husband are the worse of all.  I know they are scared but I just can’t stand being told ”you should be happy to be alive”.  What is wrong with wanting more? Everytime I hear “you should just be happy to be alive” I feel like a selfish self absorbed idiot. Anybody got any tricks on hiding the fact that you are dieting?  Would appreciate any suggestions - Thanks

I think your family needs to understand that you want to be a healthier person and that is a GOOD thing and will keep you alive longer!!

Tell them that you are ABSOLUTELY happy to be alive and that is why you want to STAY alive!!

In terms of keeping the diet a secret… I have stopped telling people that I’m dieting.. seems like they expect more than I can give. So just limit your portions… eat slower than normal… by the time they’re on their second plate they wont even notice what you haven’t eaten!

And tell them you’re just not hungry (even if you are, haha!!) Have a bite, “Ooooh that was delicious I am so stuffed I can’t eat anymore!”

Oh Lily, here is my best advice, take a veggie tray and absolutely stuff yourself on it before the meal begins, they’ll see you eating and not have clue you are dieting! It will fill you up so that you can’t down so much of that Thanksgiving type high calorie food, if you need props you can keep groaning and saying something, “Oh man this stuff is so good I wish I had pigged out before so I would have more room now”. Eat turkey and green beans or whatever healthy thing there is to eat and leave the other stuff on your plate or better yet in the serving dish! Or you could just make a meal out of the healthy things and just keep saying, “Oh man this is so good I can’t stop eating it!”. You’ll figure something out, you are obviously a very smart girl!

Yep that’s a tuff one. Try putting a layer of healthy stuff on most of plate like turkey breast and veggies, then lay a few of that unhealthy stuff on top. Keep putting food in your mouth but not the unhealthy stuff. When you get down to the unhealth stuff add more turkey or veggies and just never eat the unheathy stuff. Also chew each forkful really well so you look like you are eating more than you really are. Good luck -Dee
